Broad Heads

There are many broad heads that you have the option to choose from. You can buy the Rage Two-Blade Broad heads and you can also buy the G5 Montec Broad head. These two broad heads are very different from each other. The Rage broad head is an expandable broad head while the G5 is a fixed broad head.  An expandable broad head expands when it comes in contact with a surface. While the fixed broad heads stay in a fixed position while coming in contact with a surface. The Rage broad heads will expand to be able to cut with a two inch diameter. These broad heads can be bought with a grain size of 100 grains and 125 grains. The grain of a broad head is its weight. The G5 broad heads have a different cutting diameter for each specific grain. Therefor the G5 broad heads have a one inch cutting diameter for 85 grains, a one and one-sixteenth inch cutting diameter for 100 grains, and a one and one-eighth inch cutting diameter for 125 grains. The different grains that you would shoot depend on the weight of your arrow and the amount of pounds that you are shooting with your bow. Both of these broad heads are very reliable. However the fixed broad heads usually effect how your bow shoots compared to how it shoots with field tips on the arrow. This is because with the three blades in a fixed position will act as a propeller on the arrow and it will move the arrow around differently. The expandable broad heads will fail to open up when it hits the surface of an animal. This problem however has rarely ever happened in the woods.  These two broad heads are the two most popular on the market to hunters today. If it’s brown it’s down.

Thompson/Center Triumpn Bone Collector

The Thompson/Center Triumph Bone Collector Muzzleloader has made its mark on the muzzle loading industry as being one of the top rated muzzle loaders on the market. This gun has a 28 inch barrel and only weighs 6.5 pounds. It is a 50 caliber muzzle loader that packs a punch on whatever you are hunting. This muzzle loader features a Camo FlexTech composite stock and also Energy Burners with SIMS recoil pad. It also has a toggle-lock break-open action and an automatic hammer-block safety system. One of the gun’s best features is the new speed breach XT breech plug. This breech creates an easier way to clean out your gun and it is also a much faster way to clean the barrel. The breech also prevents 95% of gun fouling and it also prevents seizing. The new power rod includes a new pivoting t-grip for easy cleaning and a faster way to reload the muzzle loader. The weather shield fluted barrel provides dead on accuracy right out of the box. This gun has been given 4.5 out of 5 stars for its rating. I know someone that owns one of these muzzle loaders and they have said nothing bad about it. They have said that they are very happy that they purchased this muzzle loader and that they will never buy another one. I also know someone that has purchased the gun and on the first day hunting with it they shot a deer with it without sitting the gun in. This gun was right on right out of the box. If I was going to purchase a muzzle loader I would for sure purchase this gun. You can’t ask much more from a gun that is this light, easy to use and clean, and also this accurate right out of the box without being sighted in. I recommend buying this over anything else. If it is brown it is down.

New York State Trapping 2013

The 2013 New York State trapping season should have good outcomes for many trappers. The good outcomes will come by the prices of the different furs. This is because the prices are fairly high this year. The number of animals that trappers are getting this year a lower than average. However the higher prizes for the fur should make up for the decrease in the number of animals caught. The prices for raccoons this year are between $10 to $14 for average sized raccoons. The prices for a red fox range from $25 to $38. A grey fox will go for $15 to $25. Finally a coyote will sell for $10 to $22. Those prices usually depend on the size of the animal, the colors on the animal’s fur, and the condition of the fur. Usually the fur will be in a better condition later in the season. Those are just the usual and more common animals that people usually trap. Most fur buyers prefer to have the raccoon furs sold to them raw. So all you have to do is catch them and then skin the raccoon and roll it up and put it in a plastic bag and then put it in the freezer. Then the day before you sell them you can thaw hem out. All you usually have to do with the red fox, gray fox, and coyotes is to catch them, skin them, and then put them on a stretch bored and let them dry out for a day or two.  Most fur buyers will purchase the furs in these conditions. The New York State trapping season for 2013 has already started. It is open on October 25 and goes until November 15. So if you would like to make some money doing something that you love then I recommend trapping.

Shot gun season is here

The New York State regular deer season is almost here. Also known as shot gun season is the regular deer season. Opening day is Saturday November 16. This is my favorite season because I love using guns. This is also the most popular part of deer season for most hunters. This is because everyone can shoot a gun and because it is easier to shoot a gun than to shoot a bow. It is also easier to kill a deer with a gun than with the bow. You can still however use your bow if you would like to. You could also use a muzzle loader or black powder in this season. Most people will use their shotguns though. The regular season brings many more opportunities to hunters than bow season does. For example with the guns you can reach out and kill a deer at a further distance than with a bow. Also people that are in wheelchairs or that are disabled can have an opportunity to kill a day because of the difference between shot guns and bows. However shot gun season is much more dangerous than bow season is. This is because of the larger number of people that are going to be in the woods. Another reason is because people like to make a line of hunters and walk through the woods to push the deer and make them move. When people do that they usually shoot anything that moves and this can injure or even kill someone if a bullet travels in the wrong direction. So if you are going hunting during this regular season make sure you are looking behind your targets to see what is behind them and to also wear hunters orange so you make yourself more visible to other hunters. If it’s brown then it’s down.

Goose Hunting Facts

The New York State Canadian goose season has been open. It is a very good time to practice your shooting skills while having fun killing some geese. In the southern part of New York there are 4 different seasons. The first one starts September 1 and goes through September 25. This is a good season for people that don’t enjoy the cold weather as much. The next season goes from October 26 until December 18. This is the main season where the most birds are killed. This is mainly because the birds are flying more. Then there is a season that goes from December 28 to January 12. This season is also a good season to kill a lot of birds. The finale season starts March 1 and ends March 10. This season is shorter because there are not many birds that are killed. In the September season you are allowed to kill 15 geese a day. In the regular seasons you are allowed to kill only 5 geese a day.  You cannot shoot the geese with a toxic load but any other load is game. Most people will lay in fields and use specially made blinds that the geese with have a hard time seeing. Some hunters also hunt is the swamps or over ponds. Geese have very good eye sight to the point where if you are wearing a different color than the actual color in the field they will most likely pick that out and not come in for the shot. Also you have to set up the decoys almost perfectly or else they will not come in. To set up the decoys properly make sure you have at least 1 to 2 look outs and that the point of the “v” is pointing into the wind. When you set up your spread make sure you are in the middle of the field and not close to a tree line. If you can do all these things correctly you will have some success killing geese.

Conditioning for Hunters

Going hunting without any physical activity before the season starts can be dangerous. You should start to work out before the season starts to prevent this. Even if you move around doing anything for just a couple of minutes can be enough to start conditioning the heart and lungs for the season to come. There are many different activities that you can do either by yourself or if you do it with a partner.  Some of the activities are walking, bicycling, jogging, gardening, hiking, bowling, and dancing. There are more things that you can do besides those. There are also many things that you can do during your regular routine.  Such as walking up the stairs instead of taking the elevator. Instead of parking in the closest spot to the door in the parking lot, park further away. Finally start taking walks around the block on your lunch breaks. There are so many reasons for getting the activity before hunting season starts. For example walking strengthens your heart and lungs and puts them in better condition. This regular activity can help reduce fatigue and help you manage stress. All of these improvements can help you walk further in the woods. You could also be able to sit in the tree longer. The improvements with managing your stress could also help prevent you from getting buck fever. More importantly if you do some of these little activities you could prevent yourself from injury. Besides the work outs that you can do, you can also eat healthier. NYS Department of health recommends eating 5 fruits and vegetables a day. They also recommend drinking low-fat or 1 percent milk. If you can make these improvements then your hunting experience will change into being more enjoyable. You may also be able to reach that one amazing spot way deep in the woods that you weren’t able to make it to before. These changes are up to you. If it’s brown then it’s down.
