Deer Activity in Western New York

The deer activity in western New York keeps changing as the year goes on. As of right now the deer activity and movement is ranked moderate. This is mainly because the weather has changed from having temperatures in the 60’s and 70’s to temperatures in the 40’s and low 50’s. This means that the deer are on the move and the rut is starting to begin.  The charts say that the deer in western New York are in the pre rut faze. This means that the bucks are starting to follow behind the does and they will be keeping a closer watch on the does. This also means that you will see more deer movement because of the time of the year and because they are entering into the pre rut phase. The increase in activity will give you more opportunities to shoot either a nice buck or to shoot a doe if you choose. This is usually the time of year that people choose to hold off for a bigger buck and to watch the does walk by and do all the work for us as they bring the bigger more mature bucks in to us. Within the next two or three weeks the rut activity will increase to bucks chasing does around the woods.  A tip I would give to everyone is that it is now time to use your scents and calls. The calls you could use are you grunt calls and bleat calls. You can do many different things with your scents. One of my favorite things to do is to do a drag line. A drag line is when you drag a rope across the ground with scent on the end of it. You can usually start this at a point where you think there are bucks walking through and lead a path right past your stand location. This creates a chance that a buck will pick the scent up and follow it right to your stand. Well it is that time of year to shoot a bigger buck so shoot straight and if it’s brown then it’s down.
