Countdown To Deer Season

There is less than a week until deer season. Ever sense the last day of last year’s deer season I have been looking forward to this upcoming deer season. It opens up October 1 in New York for the second straight year in a row. I have no idea about anyone else out there but I am very excited to be out in the woods this year. I have spent a lot of my many and I have put in a lot of work and effort to prepare for opening day. I have trimmed all of my shooting lanes around my stands. I have been checking my trail cameras all summer and I have been shooting almost every night to make sure that I am not going to miss any of the chances presented to me in the woods. I am even starting to lose sleep from the thoughts that enter my mind about past deer seasons and what I think might happen this year. Some people may be just excited. However I am pumped. I am very passionate for the sport of hunting. I am looking forward to being able to pro staff for Sisson Outdoors this year. I hope that I get the chance to be on video to support out team. I am very thankful to have been chosen to be a part of Sisson Outdoors. Our team consists of people that share the same passion for the sport of hunting that I do. I am looking forward to carrying our calls into the woods with me this year to prove to some people that calls and scents can work. Sisson Outdoors has given me the chance to live out my dream and I am going to do my absolute best job to represent them. I hope that everyone else is just as pumped as I am to get back into the woods in less than a week. If its brown then its down.

Killing A Giant

Everyone wants to shoot that giant buck that everyone will hear about and talk about. However it is not as easy as just setting up a tree stand and hunting. There are many things you have to do to just try and kill a monster. The first thing that you will have to do is eliminate their nose. So therefore you need to use scent-free clothing, cover scents, and attractants. Scent-free clothing that you could use is the scent lock clothing line. They sell hats, gloves, jackets, pants, and one piece suits. Some cover scents you could use are the sprays that are sold by primos, dead down wind, and scent killer. And the attractants that you could use are any retailer that sells deer urine. Another thing I would do is slightly clearing a trail where I walk in and out of the woods. Therefore you eliminate a lot of noise while walking to and from your deer stand. Something else you can do is by making a mock scrape by your stand location. To do this you will need de-scented gloves, rubber boots, a scratch stick from the area, and an attractant to put down on the freshly scratched dirt. When you make your mock scrape make sure that your stand will be downwind from the location of your scrape. The buck will usually approach downwind of the scrape. To make the scrape just use any stick big enough the scrape and not break in the process.  When you are finished making the mock scrape you can just take the stick that you used with you and take it home. This will eliminate any chance of there being any scent on that stick from your scrape that could alert any deer. After that you may use an attractant if you would like. However just the smell of fresh dirt will cause a buck to be curious and visit your mock scrape. While you set traps for the monster buck you also need to put in your scouting hours to pinpoint where that giant is hiding. Also make sure that you are hitting your marks at the target range. I can’t promise that you will shoot a giant if you do all of this but these things can make your chances higher. I encourage you to do these step to try and kill a giant but if not if its brown then its down.

Why I Hunt

There are many reasons that I hunt. The biggest reason I hunt is to be in the woods with my friends and family. It is a perfect opportunity to bond with anyone you take with you. That part means the most to me. Especially when you can be the first one to see a person’s face when they kill their first kill of either a deer, turkey, goose, duck, rabbit or any animal. That face will never be seen again unless they kill a new state record buck. I love those opportunities. I also hunt because I am addicted to it. There is nothing else like getting in the words in the early morning when it is still dark out and it is dead silent. Then slowly the woods light up and get warmer when the sun rises. I love being able to just go and sit in the stand to watch different animals in the peace and quiet and to be able to spend time with others and just being able to think about everything in my life. I was raised by a family that lived for hunting seasons. My father took me out in the woods to watch him hunt when I was only five years old. I can still remember that day. I could not fall asleep the night before because I was so excited. That is when the addiction first started. I would go out almost any day that I could for the next 7 years until I was 12 and able to hunt small game for myself. I have the opportunity to recently start hunting for Sisson Outdoors and be able to share my passion of hunting with others at fairs and charity events. If I can be so addicted to the outdoors than that means anyone can. That’s why I think it is very important to get the youth involved to keep the sport of hunting alive. Until next time when it’s brown it’s down.

Mathew's Creed for 2013

The Mathew’s creed is a bow that most people are very excited about. Mathew’s has created something more advance by making it simpler in an engineering marvel. The creed features the new SimPlex cam making it the smoothest drawing high energy single cam bow ever created. This bow is a lightweight compact bow.  It is designed around a balanced synergistic system giving it an amazing blend of speed, quietness, and accuracy. The axle to axle height is 30” and the draw lengths range from 26-30”. The poundage’s start at 50 pounds and go up to 70 pounds. The fastest speed coming out of the bow is 328 feet per second. This bow’s starting price is $999. Yes this bow is very expensive but it is a very reliable bow. I have heard very good comments about the bow. I have also seen the bow shoot in person. It is very quiet and fast. If I had the chance I would probably buy a Mathew’s creed. This is because I have never seen a better bow than that. I have never heard anything bad about the bow. However the speed will vary on what type of arrows you are using too.  Carbon express arrows are very good arrows. They fly straight and fast and also hit the deer hard and will most likely go right through. However flat line arrows are much faster. My bow will gain 30 feet per second when I switch from carbon express arrows to the flat line arrows. I still use the carbon express arrows because I prefer the knock down power over speed. That is just my opinion. Whatever will suite you in your standards is the way to go. The new Mathew’s creed is the bow I would use this season. Shoot straight and if its brown its down.

How to prepare for the upcoming deer season

Preparing for the upcoming deer seasons can be very time consuming depending on what you do to prepare. You can do many different things. I know people that wash every single piece of clothing that they wear out in the woods. While I also know people that don’t do anything at all besides practice shooting whatever weapon they use to harvest their deer. I usually wash most of the clothing that I am going to wear in the woods because I believe in eliminating as much of my scent that I can. I wash all of my clothing a month before the season open. I only wash them with scent eliminating products and I do not dry them. After I wash them I hang them up outside under the awning on the garage. I start shooting my bow about a month and a half before the season. I will shoot 20 to 30 arrows every night. While shooting my bow I will try to keep my groupings of arrows within the inner circle of a paper plate. I will also attend as many bow shoots I can so then I can be ready for almost any situation. I usually do not shoot my shot gun or muzzle loader until a week or two before the season opens. My stands are set up a month before the season. I’ll always trim out shooting lanes the day I put the stand in the tree. Therefore the deer can get used to any changes they notice. I will also put out trail cams near my stand locations about a month or two before the season. This will allow me to see the deer in the area. I take my preparation very seriously because I want to be successful in the woods. There are many ways to prepare for deer season. Whether you take your time and do everything you can to be successful or you can do nothing. Which every way you choose to prepare will be fun and will get you pumped for deer season. Good luck and if it’s brown it’s down.
