New York's Deer Hunting Season Forecast

All hunters in the 2013-2014 deer season are predicted to have many opportunities to harvest any deer that they choose. Reasons for these predictions are because of the past two mild winters from 2011 to 2013. These mild winters have helped the deer find food and stay warm and this has caused an increase in the population. The deer population is rising even though there has been an increase in the doe kills. In fact, many parts of the state need reductions of their deer populations. In the upcoming deer season the DEC is accordingly increasing the amounts of DMP permits. These increases are expected to raise the number of doe kills across the state to stop the rapid population growth. So far in the past years we hunters have been failing to reach the doe harvest numbers the state desires to decrease the deer population. Therefore the DEC is predicting that with the past winters that the deer population has risen so that caused for the increase of amounts of the DMP permits. The mild winters have left the deer habitats undamaged giving the deer more places to bed down and also leaving the natural food easy to find. The unnatural high temperatures have caused the deer no reason to keep moving because they were not freezing. This caused a decrease in the total harvest numbers. With these predictions I am going to make sure to be in the woods as often as I can. So therefore my advice to other hunters is to make sure that all of your stands are cleaned up so you have many shooting lanes. Also to make sure that your bow or gun is sighted in to shoot groupings the size of plates so there is less chance of a miss or wounding a deer. I hope that everyone has a good hunting season and if it’s brown it’s down.
