Practice Makes Perfect (Y2)

Everyone says that practice makes perfect. With turkey hunting practice does make perfect. Every year every hunter out there should start getting ready for the upcoming season right around this time. It is almost a month away from opening day and the turkeys are getting ready for spring. Some people I have talked to have said they have heard a few distant gobbles out in the woods. I have recently seen a big tom out in a field strutting in front of a group of hens. What does all of this mean? It means that the spring turkey season in New York is right around the corner. What does that mean? That means that it is time for you to practice your calling so when you are leaned up against a tree and you are calling to that big long beard, you don’t mess up your chances by messing up the sound coming out of your calls. You can practice turkey calling whenever you really anywhere. You can practice when you are home or when you are driving in the truck or car. I recommend that you only use your mouth calls in the truck or car so you are still able to keep two hands on the wheel. While you are home practice your slate calls, box calls, and even push button calls. Therefor you can get familiar with them and how they sound. I would also recommend that you practice your owl hoots and crow calls because you never know when you will need to locate a long beard. You may also want to practice calling with a box or slate call at the same time you are calling with a mouth call. That way you can get comfortable with using two calls at the same time. If you practice this whole month before the season starts the long beards you hunt won’t have a clue what hit them.
